This Saturday, 23 September is Bi+ Visibility Day
Visibility is crucial for any community in ensuring a greater understanding of lived experience.
Historically many organisations, including our own, have often assigned bi+ folks to gay/msm spaces or as an add on to opportunities for events designed for and targeting self-identified heterosexual men and women. While being well intentioned and believing this provided choice for people, this approach actually re-enforces difference and demonstrates an unwillingness to learn about the individual life experiences and cored needs of the bi+ population.
LPV CEO, Richard Keane says “the provision of spaces specific to bi+ people living with HIV is key to challenging inaccurate and outdated myths in the HIV response that have centered around members of these communities being continually vilified and stigmatised as potential vectors of transmission into heterosexual populations. Sadly, this continues to re-enforce rather than challenge blame and risk perceptions built into an HIV response designed for a previous century”.
