International Day of People with Disability

Yesterday, December 3, was the International Day of People with Disability, and we are proud to recognise those people in our HIV community who also live with a disability.

To mark this day, we are releasing a new video in which Jeffrey shares his story of living with HIV and disability. Alongside this, we are also releasing our latest podcast episode from our Viral Stories night back in August, where Jeffrey told more of his story. Watch and listen below.

One in six people, or 4.4 million Australians, have disability.  There isn’t any evidence to suggest that people with HIV have higher rates of disability than the general population. However more work is needed to make sure that people with disabilities are not excluded from HIV prevention, testing and support services because of assumptions that they don’t have sex or engage in activity that might expose them to HIV.

At Living Positive Victoria we want to make sure that our peer support, peer education and community building activities meet the specific needs of people living with both HIV and disability. If you have any suggestions about how we can do better, please contact us at info@lpv.org.au.

Living Positive Victoria acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land where we work and live. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We celebrate the stories, culture and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders of all communities who also work and live on this land.
