From Homelessness to Advocacy: A Journey Toward Housing Justice

Housing is more than shelter, it is the foundation of health, dignity and stability. Yet for many people, including those living with HIV, safe and secure housing remains out of reach. Rising costs, limited social housing and systemic discrimination leave too many people without a place to call home.
Buzz Rainbow Wolf, a 58-year-old HIV-positive Gay Elder, shares his journey from homelessness to becoming an advocate for housing justice. After facing eviction, living without basic services and enduring years of financial and health challenges, he eventually built his own off-grid home in Western Victoria. The process was long and difficult, but it gave him resilience, strength and a renewed passion for advocacy.
His story highlights how housing insecurity disproportionately affects people living with HIV. Research shows higher rates of poverty, homelessness and financial stress among people with HIV, compounded by stigma and discrimination. Stable housing not only improves wellbeing, it is vital for managing health and HIV treatment.
Buzz calls for greater investment in social and affordable housing, stronger support services and policies that end discrimination. He reminds us that every voice matters and that by standing together we can work toward a future where everyone has a safe and secure home.
