Dollar Pots: Revisiting art from the AIDS crisis with Gavin Brown
by Brenton Geyer
Gavin Brown’s 1994 triptych, Dollar Pots, reminds us of a time when AIDS was ever-present among us and the fear and pain we lived with at the time was very real. Effective HIV treatment had not yet become available and the imminent mortality of those with HIV was a constant threat. Now, 31 years since it was painted, these works are being shown again publicly at the Victorian Pride Centre. Brenton Geyer chats with Gavin about his recollections of the time and his motivations for painting this scene from St Kilda’s Prince of Wales Hotel.
