Celebrating the Strength of Long-Term Survivors
More than fifty community members gathered to honour the resilience, leadership and legacy of HIV long-term survivors.
Hosted by Living Positive Victoria, Thorne Harbour Health and Positive Women Victoria, the evening brought together long-term survivors, older people living with HIV, family members, carers, healthcare workers and allies for an evening of reflection, recognition and connection.
The event opened with an Acknowledgement of Country from Bev Greet, co-founder of Positive Women Victoria, who shared her experiences as a long-term survivor. Her story offered a powerful reminder of the challenges, resilience and hope that have shaped the lives of many people living with HIV.
Guests were welcomed by Richard Keane, CEO of Living Positive Victoria, and Michelle Wesley, Vice Chair of Positive Women Victoria, who paid tribute to the strength of long-term survivors and acknowledged the impact of stigma, discrimination and the early generations of HIV treatment.
Stephen Borg, Manager of the Positive Living Centre, kept the evening flowing as emcee, while guests enjoyed a delicious dinner and a showcase of talent from across the community.
Barry Watson entertained on piano, Michelle Keating had guests dancing with her rendition of Celebration, and J.H. captivated the room with performances of You’ll Never Walk Alone and La Vie En Rose.
The evening also featured artwork by Michelle Keating, Susan Paxton and Lorraine Harding, whose pieces invited reflection on humanity, resilience and lived experience.
Most importantly, the event was an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the people who paved the way for today’s HIV community. Their courage, advocacy and determination helped transform what it means to live with HIV and continue to inspire future generations.
Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the evening such a meaningful celebration.
