Access to care, treatment and services migrating to Australia - Living Positive Victoria

Access to care, treatment and services migrating to Australia

The Australian government provides free or low-cost HIV medication to all people living with HIV, regardless of visa status. This includes tourists, international students, working visa holders, refugees, and asylum seekers.

In Australia there are laws against discrimination based on health status, including HIV. These laws protect your right to access healthcare, education, employment and services.

Australia operates as a federal system, meaning laws and programs may differ by state. If you’re moving to the state of Victoria, Living Positive Victoria can help connect you to local healthcare providers and peer support programs once you have arrived. Email us with any questions not covered here.

If you’re moving to another state, you can find similar organisations through the National Association of People with HIV Australia (NAPWHA)

Finding HIV care and treatment

It’s important to see an HIV doctor regularly for your health check-ups and medication.

Use this interactive map to locate an HIV doctor near you or visit the treatments section of our website.

We recommend bringing at least three months’ worth of HIV medication when you move to Australia. This ensures you have enough medication while you connect with local healthcare services.

Bring medical documents that describe your HIV history and recent lab results. This will help Australian doctors to tailor your care.

Email us once you arrive so we can help you find a health service nearby. It’s best to schedule your doctor appointment within your first month, as it can take a few weeks to get an appointment.

HIV treatment without Medicare

The Australian government provides free or low-cost HIV medication to all people living with HIV, regardless of eligibility for Medicare, Australia’s universal healthcare scheme.

In Victoria there are copayments to collect medication at most pharmacies. Doctor visits and blood tests may also be more expensive if you do not have access to Medicare.

If you can’t afford the copayment or fees, you can get free HIV care and treatment from government-funded clinics and pharmacies. Email us to find out about going to a government-funded pharmacy or clinic.

Living Positive Victoria offers a range of programs and social support groups. These include groups for people from Asia, South Asia, and Latin America, as well as programs supporting people of all genders, sexualities, and ages.
