PEP

PEP stands for Post-Exposure Prophylaxis. Post means ‘after’ and prophylaxis means ‘prevention’. PEP is a 28-day treatment that a person can take that can prevent HIV infection in the event that they have come into contact with HIV. PEP needs to be commenced within 72 hours of a possible exposure to HIV to protect against infection. 

PEP is free for anyone who has had a medium or high-risk exposure to HIV.   

People who have come into contact with HIV in the last 3 days should call 1800 889 887 or visit getpep.info for the location of a clinic that can assess their need for PEP.
