Taking Charge: Love your gut!

Details

Date:
June 27, 2021
Time:
11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Gut health may not sound like a sexy topic to talk about but it sure is important to know about – especially for people living with HIV.

Gut health is important for keeping our immune system, mental health and inflammation in balance. The food we eat, medications we take, lifestyles we lead and even our thoughts all have an impact on the health of our gut and therefore the health of our bodies. We will look at how the gut plays a role in immune system function, and practical tips for how we can support the health of our gut to support the health of our bodies. Presented by Sky Wiles, specialist in Nutrition and Diabetic Medicine. Lunch will be provided. Venue to be confirmed.

This event is for all people with HIV 50 and up.

A COVID-safe plan is in place to ensure your safety and for contact tracing purposes. Please note that this event may be rescheduled depending on COVID restrictions. Our program officers will be in touch with you to update you with any changes. The Peer Support Network is a monthly and informal group gathering. It is conducted in a safe, social and partly educational format. Utilising an empowerment model, it builds resilience and health literacy for participants to engage with health and aged care providers.

It also improves self-advocacy, develops skills to disclose HIV status, deal with stigma and discrimination, and builds peer networks. These group meetings are peer led, ensuring that they meet the group’s needs. Topics include improving treatments understanding, managing medication for multiple health conditions, legal matters, Advanced Care planning, nutrition, exercise, cognitive health and computer literacy. The HIV & Ageing Project trains volunteer peer facilitators to enhance peer-led capacity as well as the sustainability of support networks.
